Towards a Prosthetic Power: Guardians, 2017. Documentation of interventions in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
For this project, I looked to the ways sculptures and monuments communicate power through classical reference in a particular area of Golden Gate Park. As a sculptor, I am interested in upending, even if momentarily, the gender hierarchies within our culture that are often communicated through cultural objects and signifiers in public spaces.
The public acts represented in the works that comprise Towards a Prosthetic Power: Day One, One Day (Guardians, Un-False Beard and Internalized) are meant to historicize the continuing feminist struggle for representation and equality, creating alternative images of power and ideas concerning the monumental. This project strives for visibility and access and points to the absurdity of the otherwise.
